Tampa 2

This post will discuss the famous "Tampa 2" defense that was made popular by Tony Dungy and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defenses of the late 90's and early 2000's.

The Tampa 2 defense is one that relies on a slightly different version of the traditional cover 2. The corners are fade to flat players, the safeties are deep 1/2 players, the Sam and Will linebackers are seam players and the Mike is a deep run thru player (17 - 22 yards). Below is a diagram of Tampa 2:

You can see this concept online if you click on the following link: Pat N Go is a great website that has a plethora of playbooks and game film!!

Now, you can run Tampa 2 with a 4 down or a 3 down front and it can be a 4 man or 3 man rush call. At Liberty we played what was called "Okie Tony" as our base call and the Jack linebacker was the run - thru and the Mike played the low hole. This concept can also be played with dime personnel and the Jack linebacker is replaced with a defensive back. This concept is illustrated below:

Tampa 2 is a great coverage that has its strengths and weaknesses but it has stood the test of time. I read that Lovie Smith is going to run it down in Tampa Bay. Maybe they can party like it is 2002....
